The Most Important Phase of Deck Construction

If you were to commission a contractor to build you a 2-bedroom home, completely forgetting that you really need 3 bedrooms, you won’t be very happy with the result. It won’t be the contractor’s fault that you didn’t properly plan for your family’s needs. The same is true when it comes to deck construction. In fact, with any construction project, the most important phase is the planning. Take the time to consider how you will use your deck, and don’t be afraid to ask your contractor questions during this important first step, so you can get the results you’ll be happy with for years to come.

  • Location – The location of your deck is one of the first things you’ll need to plan. Choose an area where you either already have an exterior door for access or plan to install. Consider which room or rooms you want to be able to access the deck from. You should also consider the side of the home to determine if the rising or setting sun will make the deck less useable during the time of day you plan to use it most. This can be alleviated with a covering, but you’ll need to plan for that expenditure if that is the case.
  • Materials – There are several choices for deck construction materials, each with advantages and disadvantages. Consider such things as appearance, feel underfoot, initial cost, maintenance costs, and durability when choosing the material for your deck.
  • Space – In order to determine how much square footage you need for your new deck, consider all the things you will use it for. Do you need space for a grill? How much seating will you have in place? Do you plan to entertain, and if so, how many people at one time? It can be helpful to use graph paper when planning the deck construction size.
  • Design – Do you want one large area or separate ones at different levels? Do you want railings or an infinity edge deck? Do straight edges appeal to you, or would curved areas impress you more? Do you want steps off the deck for access to and from your yard?
