KC's Improvement & Construction Co. has been proudly serving the Piedmont Triad for over 40 years. We are a family-run business geared toward total customer satisfaction.
Absolutely! We are a licensed General Contractor with the North Carolina Licensing Board of General Contractors (License #57314). Our licenses are proudly displayed in our office and a copy can be provided to any client who requests it. We always encourage clients to verify a contractor's license is in good standing before hiring.
Yes! We are proud members of the NC Licensing Board of General Contractors, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), the Greensboro Builders Association (GBA), and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). We are also Certified Lead Renovators with NCDHHS and Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS).
Yes! KC's holds General Liability, Commercial Automobile, Workers Compensation, and Umbrella coverage. We can provide a Certificate of Insurance to any client who requests it. We strongly encourage all homeowners to request proof of insurance from any contractor before work begins — never hire a contractor who refuses to provide it.
Our primary service area includes Guilford, Alamance, Rockingham, Forsyth, Randolph, and Stokes Counties. Not listed? Contact us — we may still be able to help!
Absolutely. You can read testimonials from past clients on our website. We take client privacy seriously, so we request that a potential client firm up their commitment to building with KC's before we provide direct contact to a past client with a similar project.
Yes! We have financing solutions to help fit every budget. Visit our financing page to explore your options.
You should expect quick and courteous service, regular communication with every member of your project team, and professional conduct at all times. We take the time to set up your project on the front end to minimize interruptions and enable a successful build.
KC's uses JobTread to provide clients with a personalized project portal. From your desktop, tablet, or phone you can view daily logs and photos, check your contract balance, see upcoming calendar items, and communicate directly with your project team — all in one place. It gives you unprecedented transparency into everything happening on your project.
Absolutely. Your project team updates your portal daily with logs, photos, to-do items, and questions. You'll also have direct access to your Project Manager and Project Assistant. All project communication runs through the portal so nothing gets lost in email.
It depends on the scope. KC's employs a full staff of working carpenters. Trade work like electrical, HVAC, and plumbing requires licensed trade professionals — as is standard for any general contractor in NC. We only use licensed subcontractors, and you will always be introduced to any worker on your property by a KC's team member.
Your project team is available for emergencies at all times. Call a member of your project team immediately if an issue arises. We treat every issue with the respect and urgency it deserves and will remedy it right away.
Yes. Our flexible approach allows for adjustments during the project. Change orders are handled transparently through your project portal so you always know the impact on cost and schedule before approving anything.
No two remodels are the same. Your investment depends on your selections, materials, and scope of work. We've developed a rough project cost calculator to help you get a ballpark range before scheduling your estimate appointment.
o
It varies by scope, but here are typical ranges from our experience: bathroom remodels take about 7-12 weeks, kitchen remodels take 12–20 weeks, and additions take 12–25 weeks. Before your project starts, you'll receive a full detailed calendar of anticipated events.
Most renovations can be completed while your family stays put. We take every precaution to minimize daily disruptions. Noise, dust, and crews are to be expected, but only you can decide if temporarily relocating is right for your family. Our team will make every effort to keep your home livable throughout.
You're welcome to supply items like vanities, light fixtures, and bath fixtures. However, client-provided materials are not warrantied by KC's, and in our experience, homeowners sourcing their own materials often experience delays. Our preferred vendor network is generally the better path.
We warranty our work in writing. Construction performed at your home is guaranteed free from workmanship defects for one year from the date of substantial completion. All manufacturer warranties are passed through to you as the client.
As a full design-build company, we can handle the design. We offer design contracts ranging from simple floor plan development to full architectural plans. We also have a preferred vendor network to guide you through every selection. Contact us to learn more about our design process.
Yes! We work with specialty products every day — composite decking like Trex, EZE Breeze and Screeneze windows for sunrooms, Schluter-Kerdi shower systems, and more. We have the knowledge and experience to install these products to manufacturer specifications.
The tub/shower combination remains the industry standard because of its flexibility. Generally, if you have multiple bathrooms, you should keep at least one tub — a home without any tub can affect resale value. That said, it's a personal decision. About 50% of buyers don't care about tubs; the other 50%, especially those with young children, do. KC's can help you achieve either vision.
A curbless shower — also called a walk-in shower — has no step or barrier at the entry. They're easier to clean, eliminate the need for a shower door, are universally functional for all ages and abilities, and look great. With very few disadvantages, curbless showers continue to be one of our most requested features.
Proper ventilation is critical to the long-term health of your bathroom. The primary purpose of a bathroom fan is to remove moisture and odors. When we assess your scope of work, we'll identify any ventilation upgrades needed and communicate that to you upfront.
Yes — white-on-white color palettes reflect light and create a sense of space. Good lighting, large mirrors, floating vanities, and glass shower panels all help. If you can't change the layout, these design choices can make a significant visual difference without a major investment.
It depends on your budget and goals. Refinishing a tub can significantly reduce remodel cost — a properly maintained refinished tub can last another 20 years. Tile can also be refinished affordably. We'll guide you to the best option for your project and budget.
For shower floors, choose tile that is slip-resistant, water-resistant, and sized appropriately for the slope of the shower pan. The options are almost limitless — subway tile, stone, glass, and more. Our vendor network can walk you through selections hands-on so you find exactly what you're looking for.
Single sink vanities are comfortable at 36–48 inches. You can fit two sinks in a 60-inch vanity, but 72 inches is preferred. Think about your morning routine, how many people will use the bathroom at once, and how much counter space you actually need — we'll help you find the right fit.
Wall removal usually requires an engineered beam to support the roof load, and eliminating flooring transitions may require a new floor throughout. The right cabinet layout — mixing open shelving with traditional cabinets, or adding a breakfast bar or island — can help you achieve the open feel without sacrificing storage.
Absolutely. You can refinish the cabinet boxes, add new hardware, install invisible hinges, or install new doors to get a whole new look at a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. We'll help you identify the best option for your goals and budget.
Not at all! Mixing cabinet colors and styles is one of the hottest trends right now. Black island cabinets with warm wood-tone wall cabinets, gray and white combinations — the options are endless. Our team can help you create a cohesive custom look that makes your kitchen feel truly unique.
Yes — and vice versa. Switching between gas and electric is fairly straightforward but requires a licensed electrician and plumber. Gas stoves (often called "dual fuel") need both electricity for the clock and igniter and gas for the cooktops. It's a popular and economical upgrade to pair with a kitchen remodel.
It depends on your lifestyle, budget, and aesthetic. Quartz offers a stone look with low maintenance. Granite is unique and durable but needs periodic resealing. Marble, soapstone, and limestone offer superior heat resistance. Laminate and solid surfacing are budget-friendly options. Butcher block adds warmth and charm. Concrete is great for an industrial look. We'll guide you to the right choice for how you actually use your kitchen.
Common locations include below the countertop (saves counter space), integrated into cabinetry (customizable height), hidden in a spare cabinet (out of sight), above the range (doubles as a range hood), or in the island (keeps it accessible for everyone). Each has trade-offs — we'll help you find the placement that fits your layout and how you cook.
Consider storage needs, electrical requirements, lighting, insulation for climate control, and whether the roof design should match your current home. Our design experts will walk you through every consideration from concept to completion.
Absolutely — permits are mandatory in all counties. They protect you from substandard work, ensure safety inspections by a third party, and are required for any work to be listed for tax value if you ever sell. Never work with a contractor who says a permit isn't required.
Attached garages offer convenience — covered access directly into your home. Detached garages offer more privacy, minimize noise transfer, reduce combustion gas risk, and give you more flexibility for future expansion. We'll help you weigh the pros and cons for your specific property and needs.
Yes — most municipalities restrict building within 10 feet of side property lines. You also need to consider easements, height restrictions, and how much of your lot can be covered with impermeable materials. When you work with KC's, we handle all the background research to maximize what's possible on your property.
Absolutely. Our design professionals will help you visualize your space, ensure you've included everything on your must-have list, and identify any issues before we break ground — so you can feel fully confident before construction begins.
From our experience, a typical addition requires about 3 months for completion. Scope, size, and complexity all affect the timeline. You'll receive a full detailed schedule before we break ground so you always know what to expect.
