Choosing a Space

The first step to transforming extra space or an empty room into a home gym is choosing the right space.  The space will be somewhere with enough space to store your equipment.  Your equipment may include a treadmill, rowing machine, exercise bike and maybe some weights.  Remember you also need space to use that equipment.

The chosen space should also be a safe space to workout.  When choosing this space in an older home a number of things should be taken into consideration before transforming that space.  Things such as lead paint in homes built prior to 1940 and 1977 with the chances of lead being in the paint in the later years.  If the space is going to be in the basement area of the home you want to make sure that you waterproof the cinder block walls to keep the moisture out.

Painting and Accents

If the space is a big space and you don’t want to use the entire space for the home gym the area would have to be framed out to make the space.  To create a natural energetic glow you can paint the walls of your home gym a soft white or warm gray.  If it is a small space you don’t want to overwhelm yourself with color.  Once this is completed drywall and painting would need to be completed.  Some like to have mirrors installed to watch form and work outs.  Popular in-home gym accents are easy to care for plants, your favorite workout motivational quote, or abstract art.

Flooring

Flooring will be dependent on what the individual wants for the floor.  Rubber flooring is the most popular flooring for home gyms and it is for good reason.  Rubber can support even the heaviest exercise equipment and it can absorb the shock of heavy weights or constant jumping.  Rubber flooring is extremely durable, shock absorbent, versatile, soft cushion, and great for floor work.  This material is also DIY-friendly and cost affective for flooring for a home gym.

Equipment

Depending on the space that you have available in this area you want to make sure that the equipment that you put in this area works for you.  Choosing the proper equipment will make your home gym personalized to fit your workout.  Whether it is a weight bench, treadmill, hand weights, or wall workout equipment.
