Kitchens are one of the most popular remodeling projects homeowners undertake. Unfortunately, the kitchen is one of the most indispensable rooms in your home, and surviving without it during a big project can be a challenge! Having a happy remodel is possible. Here are Quality Design Build’s top tips for living together peacefully during your kitchen remodel.
Temporary Kitchen
Set up a Temporary Kitchen outside your kitchen. While tempting, eating out constantly during a remodel can be expensive and tiresome. You may plan on the occasional take-out or restaurant meal during your remodel, but you’ll still need a spot for food preparation.
Choose a temporary location out of the way of the remodel. Some areas that often work are a corner of the basement, dining room, garage, or workroom with portable tables, shelves, crates, and folding chairs. You may be able to use some of your old cabinets to create a temporary countertop and storage.
Get Creative
Revisit your college days! Hot plates, microwaves, and mini-fridges are staples of dorm life, and during your renovation, they can be your best friends again. Now may be the time to break out that old George Foreman grill that’s been collecting dust in the closet for a few years.
Portable appliances like slow cookers and toaster ovens can also come in really handy for easy meal prep and cleanup. If you can’t move your fridge and freezer to your temporary kitchen area, check Craigslist and local used appliance stores, or borrow a mini-fridge from a friend if possible.
Don’t Go Overboard
Keep it simple. You might come across that waffle iron and food processor you’ve been meaning to use more often, but chances are you won’t use it during the renovation. Stash the fancy stuff out of the way and keep commonly used staples in clear storage containers for easy access.
Be Prepared
Stock up on disposables like paper plates. Since your sink and dishwasher will be out of commission for the time being, any dirty dish washing will take some creativity. Avoid doing dishes in the bathtub by stocking up on paper plates, napkins, cups, and biodegradable utensils.
Play Make Believe
Your children may feel stressed during the remodeling process when their house is all messed up. Keep the peace and sooth their nerves by playing make believe. Pretend you’re camping and the kitchen consists of the microwave, toaster oven, and whatever other mobile products you may be using.
