Protecting Your Home During Hurricane Season

It is that time of year again when the weather can be very unpredictable, and hurricane season is upon us.  As home owners, we don’t know if hurricane season will be good to us or bad for us.  Hurricane season brings lots of rain, strong winds, and heavy flooding that, depending on where you live, can stick around for days or even weeks after the storm has come and gone.

  • Insurance- One of the first things that you want to look into is if you have hurricane coverage on your homeowner’s insurance.  If you don’t, this is something you want to look into, especially if you live in an area that is prone to be in the hurricane weather path.
  • Securing Your Home- Make sure your home is secured from any wind damage by boarding up your windows and doorways.  If you live in an area that gets a lot of the weather from the storm, you may want to invest in window shutters to secure your home properly.
  • Trim Trees- In the off-season, if you have large trees that may cause damage to your home in the event of a storm, you may want to trim or cut the trees in your yard down.
  • Protect Your Roof- Go the extra mile and install straps/additional roof clips to make sure the roof is secure to the frame structure to keep it from blowing away.
  • Secure Heavy and Large Items- Make sure any heavy and large items that may be outside in your yard are secured and strapped down to keep them from blowing away and causing damage as well.
  • Backup Generator- Make sure you invest in a backup generator.  In case the power goes out and you are without power to your home for a long period of time, you can still operate.  We never realize how much we rely on electricity until it is gone.
  • Inventory- Complete an inventory on your home, so just in case you lose everything, you know exactly what you had before the storm.  With Mother Nature being so unpredictable, you don’t want to risk not completing an inventory. If you do have one, you will have the information you need to rebuild and recoup money for your loses.

If you complete the majority if not all of these things prior to hurricane season, it can help tremendously with the after-effects of a hurricane.
